Resources

Lent is a great time of the Church’s liturgical year in which we are called to reflect upon and prepare for our Lord’s Paschal Mystery (Jesus’ Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension).

As it is a time of preparation, there are many resources out there to help Catholics to grow in their spiritual life during this time. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but includes some great resources for individual or group study.

Web Resources

1. Official websites

  • The Vatican Lent website – This is the Official Vatican website which contains links to special Lenten websites from 2001 to the present. It includes links to all the “Words of the Holy Father” for the current Lenten season, including Benedict XVI’s Message for Lent, his general audiences, homilies, and even some beautiful Lenten music that is free to download. All this and much more is on this wonderful website.
  • USCCB Lenten Season – This is the official website for Lent from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. It includes different sections on each of the four pillars of the Catechism, Lenten video meditations, and much more.

Books

  • The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ by St. Anne Catherine Emmerich – This book is a transcription of the visions of St. Anne Catherine Emmerich regarding the Passion. It is deeply moving spiritual reading and much of it was used in Mel Gibson’s famous The Passion of the Christ film. For example, the moving scene in the film where Mary tenderly wipes up Jesus’ blood where he had been scourged is straight from this book. This book is in the realm of private revelation, and thus is not guaranteed to be free from error in its depictions. Nonetheless, it is a profound work and paints a very vivid picture of the Passion.
  • Sermons of St. Francis de Sales for Lent by St. Francis de Sales – How can you go wrong with a book of homilies on Lent from one of the Church’s greatest saints?
  • How to Make a Good Confession by Fr. John A. Kane – A handy pocket-guide to help make Confession more fruitful. A great help in fulfilling the obligation for annual Confession (see Code of Canon Law, can. 989), which is traditionally associated with the Lenten season in order to fulfill our annual obligation of receiving the Eucharist during the Easter season (see Code of Canon Law, can. 920).
